Palin.

What was McCain thinking?

The latest story is that she was only interviewed in the vetting process the day before she was selected, which is probably why so many stories are seeing light now, like the continuation of the abuse-of-power story; the link that her husband and she as well have to an Alaskan secessionist political party; the earmarks that she secured as mayor of Wasilla, which goes to her credibility as a reformer; and video from her speaking at her local church discussing how U.S. troops should only be "out on a task that is from God" along with other views that seem to be already hurting Republican efforts to woo Jewish voters.

This calls into serious question McCain's whole vetting process, and therefore McCain's judgement and wisdom.

Is that really the shakeup that the campaign was looking for?

I've had too much going on the last few days to make a proper post about this, but the answer to your question is: he wasn't thinking. The Republicans are whining that everyone is picking on her, but the fact is that they should have done this themselves long before her name was ever made public. If she's good enough to be chosen, then she needs to be strong enough to put up with the scrutiny just like the big boys do. THAT is equality.

Other than that, I am beside myself with glee. Everything that they've criticized Obama for keeps turning up somewhere in Palin's past.

I know! It amuses me too.

I'm just surprised at this level that would make such a clear error.

That was great! If you didn't see The Daily Show last night, definitely check it out today, as it was hilarious!

I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop, because this seems so ill-thought out, so unplanned and just so...stupid, that I'm afraid it's not real. Not that I want it to be real. She's terrifying on many levels. o_O

Yes, I've seen many on the left who think this was done deliberately for one nefarious purpose or another. But I am of the opinion it was just a huge mistake. The NY Times article I think pegged it right in that McCain was leaning towards either Lieberman or Ridge, but when the campaign floated the idea of a pro-choice VP candidate about two weeks ago, and the conservatives said "hell, no!", he made a rush decision for what looked like a good candidate on paper (a young, likable, strongly conservative woman) but missed all the crazy buried underneath.

Agreed. It seems uncharacteristically rash. There are many reasons I hate the Republican party (and last night's Daily Show hit on most of them omg), but I wouldn't ever call them bad at the planning/PR game. With the exception of Katrina. That was a bad move.

I just sent C an email recommending this book, but seriously: Grace for President by Kelly DiPucchio -- it explains the electoral college in a very kid-friendly way, as well as being very girl power-y in a really refreshing way. Perfect for both O and A this fall. :D

Awesome! Thank you for the recommendation, I will check it out. It is very interesting how much they are already interested in the election. Just yesterday Annie found an Obama button at school and asked some of her friend's parents who they were going to vote for.
