Can Lucas be trusted with 'Star Wars' universe?

Is there a point at which a work of art becomes the property of those who consume it rather than the artist?  Should there be?

That reminds me of one of my favorite essays: The Complex and Terrifying Reality of Star Wars Fandom, about how serious Star Wars fans actually hate Star Wars. :D

I talked to Carrie a bit about this and she was all whatever, it keeps O happy. >.> She is clearly too much a mother and not enough a fan. And she is probably a better person for it.

I, however, feel sad that O doesn't have any cognitive separation between the original trilogy and the new shittastic one, because he kinda saw them all at once, due to his age. I am probably the worse for actually being concerned about this. <.

Star Wars 1977 has magic like nothing else on screen. For someone who was just old enough to see the original in the cinema when it was released, and emerged spellbound, I think I'm slightly odd in that I don't hate the new trilogy, although that said, there are plenty of bits that are truly cringeworthy.

[livejournal.com profile] fastcub has the Clone Wars DVDs, and they're kinda fun.

I think, though, really, the genie is out of the bottle now, and there's no way that people can put the stopper back in and preserve Star Wars in aspic.
