I haven't updated in a bit, so I thought I would add these few.

As a former red-state liberal, I found this article by Dave White excellent. Just a small excerpt:
"I’m from Texas. I love country music. I lived in Dixie Chick Natalie Maines’s hometown of Lubbock, Texas, for seven years. ... I am the formerly silent liberal-redneck constituency that loves the Chicks for their music and their politics. I’m ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas, too. I’m thrilled to see the band come out swinging with the taunting lead single 'Not Ready to Make Nice.' And it’s good to see that 'Taking the Long Way' debuted at the No. 1 spot on the Billboard album chart, selling more than 526,000 copies."

I had planned to post on this, and on reading sundancekid's thread on the sorry state of country music, it became imperative.

Check out http://www.woxy.com. They style themselves the "Future of Rock n' Roll" and they play excellent modern rock!! I started listening to them at work and have discovered all sorts of great bands: The New Pornographers, Dios Malos, Her Space Holiday, The Minus 5, Immaculate Machine, and Sons and Daughters, just to name a few. They also play artists I've liked for a while, like Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, Tegan and Sara, The Bravery, The Killers, etc.

Give it a try. And also check out the Vintage Woxy feed for great "historical" modern rock, alternative and punk.
