I've been so busy I haven't been able to do these in a while.  Even if you aren't interested in particle physics, the comparison between the two science stories I have below is very telling about the state of American corporate media, in my opinion.

I haven't posted in a while (busy at work) so to save space I'm putting some of these up without comments, but they are all worthy of peek, even the funny sounding ones.

Avast!

I've been way busy at work, and also haven't find many interesting stories lately, but I have a few today. Oh, and belated birthday wishes for [personal profile] jlh!
  • Movies
    • Snake Eyes
I had wondered when someone would compare the poor performance if the hyped Snakes on a Plane to the amazing, brilliant, but unfortunately also lackluster performing Serenity, and of course it was Henry Jenkins! (Though he is actually referring to what someone else has written.)

I didn't find many interesting links over the past few days, but then today I discovered a lot. Here they all are.

    • Natural Born Heroes
An article specifically about the new Oliver Stone movie World Trade Center, but that makes more general and interesting comments about how the portrayal of 9/11 has changed through time in various art forms.
  • Technology
    • Big Mother is Watching
By using electronic tracking and payment, school cafeteria's can report to parents on what their kids are buying, or even block them from buying specified foods.
    • Moguls of New Media
A very interesting article about the "stars" of social networking sites.

Playing with the format to try to remove all the extraneous spaces.

Just a few today. My favorite was removed, but this morning MSNBC had posted the article, "Lightening set Rhode Island port ablaze." I guess the moral of the story is that in order to avoid bursting into flames, ports (and presumbably other transportation hubs) should not go on diets.

  • Media
  • Movies
    • Kiefer Sutherland Headlines Final Movie Cast
In a total blast from the past, they are making a DragonLance animated movie, featuring Kiefer Sutherland as Raistlin, Lucy Lawless as Goldmoon, Michael Rosenbaum as Tanis Half-Elven, and Michelle Trachtenburg as Tika.
  • Politics
    • Bush blocked probe into spying
According to Gonzales, Bush himself was the one who wouldn't allow investigators access to look into the warrentless eavesdropping! So he is Nixon after all.
    • Women misled on abortion risks
As always the case in politics, why discuss science with reasoning and data, when you can just lie instead?
  • Science
  • Television
    • CW mixes new and old
Veronica Mars will have a late start on the new network, Oct. 3rd, but will follow the Gilmore Girls so I think it should definitely increase its audience.

I realize I don't post very often, but at the sametime I am always pointing out interesting links/articles/whatnots to [personal profile] wordplay. So I thought I would start trying to combine the two. Today is a science heavy day, but that won't always be the case.

Why yes, they are releasing yet another edition of the LOTR movies, this time combining the theatrical and extended editions and then adding yet even more material. Can you say "cash cow"?

(And sadly, I will probably buy them.)

(Maybe)
